Academic English for International School Students

Brain Trust Academy likewise also offers Academic English for International School Students. Designed to be aligned with the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), we inculcate English proficiency skills which include reading, writing, listening and speaking, all of which could be applied inside the classroom such as essay writing, class participation and in-class presentations.

What’s unique about this program is that Brain Trust Academy has incorporated other skills so they could take college admissions requirement tests such as SAT, TOEFL and IELTS so they could pursue their dreams of studying in a world-famous university they want.

Brain Trust Academy has divided this program into four levels, each of which has a specific goal, to wit:

    1. Academic English Level 1: Complete introduction to academic English, starting with the basics which include vocabulary, SAT word lists, synonyms, antonyms and terminology that refer to increasing the four basic skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking (grammar may be introduced depending if the students require specific grammar points for the curriculum). Each class will focus on a single skill and the associated vocabulary and synonym use to produce formal academic language.

    2. Academic English Level 2: Academic English level two focuses on expanding the amount of academic vocabulary to produce advanced sentence structures for writing (formal and informal). Students will be tasked with reading and comprehending different writing styles so they could broaden their point of view in regards to their own essays. This course will continue to build the student’s four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking with the addition of critical thinking and problem solving. SAT reading and error corrections will also be a focus in level two.

    3. Academic English Level 3: Level three is designed to push the students with vigorous amounts of academic work that includes a new insight into the IB course ‘Theory of Knowledge.’ Each class will be focusing on two skills that complement each other to allow the students to comprehend how cohesive the English language is. Also, continuing to build a vast amount of SAT, TOEFL, TOEIC and IELTS vocabulary and their associated synonyms. Throughout level three, students will be able to understand complex academic readings and listening by pinpointing keywords or phrases.

    4. Academic English Level 4: Level four is designed to hone each skill to fit the bracket of higher education with the incorporation of interview skills and specific writing tasks. Primarily developing test-taking skills for English proficiency and related subjects. Increasing the amount of reading, writing, listening and professional academic speaking to fit any scenario. The IB TOK will also be rigorously involved with each lesson to prepare the students for the course presentation and 1600 word essay. With the completion of level four, students will have a different view on English and how creativity can play a huge part in organizing ideas for academic writing in secondary school and during University.

    IELTS Review for Adults

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test review is the newest program of Brain Trust Academy. This program, aimed for working adults aged 22-40, is meant to help them pass the test with a grade band of about 6.0.

All four necessary skills, namely, reading, writing, listening and speaking, are taught in these courses. Some people feel more confident in some of the necessary skills; that is why Brain Trust Academy decided to split the course into two: reading/writing and speaking/listening are taught in separate courses so that students will have a choice whether to focus on a specific weakness or master the test in general.

Each course is worth a total of 36 hours. While some people might think it is too short, we believe it is just enough time for them to acquire the skill sufficiently, for we believe that education needs to be efficient. We go straight to the point: when we say we are in the business of educating people, we take our word seriously and mean it.

It might come as a surprise, however, that once inside the class, the atmosphere is rather congenial and relaxed. This is true to Brain Trust Academy philosophy of having fun in learning but getting seriously good results.

All student-candidates will have to undergo testing and evaluation, including a person-to-person interview with one of our qualified examiners. The candidate’s level is assessed, and a corresponding program is recommended based on the results of the test.

How different is IGCSE from IB?

Developed by the Cambridge International Examinations and running for 25 years now, IGCSE is offered to students 14 to 16 years old in preparation for the IB DP. It is an English language curriculum that offers 70 subjects including 30 languages in which schools offer in any combination. Students are required to take a minimum of 5 or maximum or 14 subjects in which core lies on English, Mathematics, and Sciences. Other subjects on Social Sciences, Arts, and Technology can also be chosen.

IGCSE curriculum develops learner’s knowledge, understanding, and skills in the following areas:

    • Subject content

    • Applying knowledge and understanding to new as well as unfamiliar situations

    • Intellectual enquiry

    • Flexibility and responsiveness to change

    • Working and communicating in English

    • Influencing outcomes

    • Cultural awareness

Meanwhile, IB DP is a 2-year assessed educational program offered to students 16 to 19 years old. IGCSE or other equivalent curriculum is a pre-requisite to qualify into the IB DP. The IB DP provides internationally recognized qualification to enter higher education.

IB DP has six subject groups and core requirements. The subject groups include a) studies in language and literature, b) language acquisition, c) individuals and societies, d) experimental sciences, e) mathematics, and f) the arts. The core requirements to be taken in addition to the subject groups include Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

To support these requirements, Brain Trust Academy also conducts EE and TOK. Support for Internal Assessment (IA) is also given to IB students.

Which is more effective, group or individual lessons?

At Brain Trust Academy, lessons are conducted in small groups to foster both academic and cultural exchange among its students from different international schools and nationalities. Such exchange also promotes healthy competition, collaboration, and spirit of community among students.

While we emphasize the beauty of small group classes, we recognize that some students feel more comfortable alone, so we also conduct individual lessons based on student preferences.

My child can converse well in English. Why would my child still enlist in the Academic English program?

Your child, like most international school students, may be equipped with the abundance of speaking skills, but this type of speech and fluency is known as ‘General English.’ Western people as well as students who learn English as a second or third language all know general English. Academic English is not learned in the same manner. With general English, there are various factors that improve a person’s skill level: atmosphere, school, home language, friends and so on. However, academic English needs to be taught formally. Case in point: academic writing is important to learn especially for students because it teaches them how to think critically and objectively while clearly conveying complex ideas in a well-structured, concise format. In order to earn good grades and high-level degrees, students need to learn to write quality academic essays and to be able to present their ideas clearly and logically as writing is a powerful tool in the business or medical world. Academic listening and reading are skills that complement writing, in such a way that students are able to develop different perspectives and comprehend what they are either listening to or reading about. In the modern world, simply being able to speak English is not enough to secure a successful career.

What is the ideal age of students joining the program?

Here at Brain Trust Academy, we do not discriminate on students’ age. Our programs are developed for students with the general knowledge and capabilities with the English language. The academic English program will nurture your child’s English ability to differentiate between general and academic English for classroom scenarios. In order to determine if a student may join our program, the student must take a placement test which consist of: Grammar, writing and speaking. Based on the total scores of the individual, they will be placed in the appropriate class. Each class has groups of students with the same ability level and similar ages, so the environment for the learners is quite comfortable. If your child is at a starter English level, he or she may be eligible for a pre-Academic English course.

What is unique about the English programs of Brain Trust Academy (in other words, why would I choose it over other academies)?

The classes we provide are energized and fun as well as academic. Students are taught to express opinions and learn in a non-traditional fashion. We introduce new world topics, English proficiency testing (SAT, IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL) exercises and a vast amount of related academic vocabulary. Our teachers treat your children with respect and understanding, and we want to cherish each individual with the proper education necessary for their specific learning style. Brain Trust Academy’s sole purpose is to see your children succeed and we help students establish their academic potential. In traditional English academies, students are required to take pages and pages of notes; at Brain Trust Academy, however, students use their pencils and pens for worksheets or exercises that pertain to the topic lesson of the day. There is no note-taking because the teachers provide print outs of every academic section they accomplish.

Why does my child need to complete the Academic English course for him/her to take SAT while other academies can do the same in a much shorter time frame?

Academic English is an investment into your child. If you send your kid to a six week SAT course, they will study and learn the skills to find answers, never comprehending any of the information. After the test is complete, students will usually forget all of the SAT strategies. Our academic English course provides insight into the top English proficiency tests without mentioning which test we are learning about. Introducing various sections from different test helps achieve a wider knowledge of test taking skills. Students can take what they learn from our academic English class into their future university classes like economics, literature, biology, among others. Developing the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) will contribute to how well your child processes information. At Brain Trust Academy we also teach students how to analyze, think critically, and to recognize opposing views.
